Janet Louise Westervelt

Janet Louise Westervelt, age 73, passed away on Wednesday September 23, 2020, at her home at The Pines at Catskill Center For Nursing and Rehabilitation, in Catskill, N.Y. Janet was born and raised on a farm in Selkirk, NY. To parents Jesse and Lois Taber. She survived by her son Jason Westervelt. Her sister Joanie Haresign (Steve) and pre-deceased by her brother Jesse Taber Jr, and sister Elizabeth Geeseman. She was a graduate of R.C.S. High School. Janet was a woman of simple pleasures. She did venture out of her small-town comfort during her youth to live in Buffalo NY. However, family which Janet loved the most brought her back to the Selkirk area. Here she would raise her only child Jason Westervelt. Janet was a hard worker, and wonderful cook. During her life she worked for Farm Family in Glenmont, N.Y. She retired from there and spent her days doing puzzles and crossword puzzles. Janet was a woman of few words, but you knew what she meant when said it. Of all Janet’s accomplishments is life, none made her as proud than raising her son Jason. If ever a mother loved her son, Janet made sure Jason knew he was loved. In Janet’s words “I love that boy and he is my world. If he wants it, and I have it, he will have it. Janet gained other titles in her life. When her son had taken a wife Brooke Westervelt (Campbell). Janet did not gain a daughter in law - Janet gained a daughter. Janet would then become a grandmother to Lyric, Tyler, Conner and Jaycen, she also was proud to call the other children in the family hers. By which she was known simply as Grandma Janet. Janet took a pride in being a Grandmother, her struggles were less then when she was a single mother. She showered them with love and never took for granted a day with them, singing and playing games. Over the years the kids grew up and Janet still made it a point to be involved in all aspects of their lives. Before her passing she became a great grandmother to Xavion, (son of her granddaughter Lyric and Malik). Over time the world can be a place that is not kind, some move forward and some move backwards in life. Janet’s life was not one of adventure or tall tales. It was one full of love and memories that her family will forever remember. Janet’s kindness was like no other. Her ability to love knew no bounds. Her mind may have moved backwards but Janet would want everyone to move forward. Janet loved butterflies. A simple pleasure, but just like the butterflies Janet loved. She was very much like one. After all a butterfly is proof that you can go through a great deal of darkness and still have something beautiful. Often, we chase them, but if you sit a while quietly it will come to you. Janet did not leave the earth of ours, but she surrounded the ones she loved the most with beauty. A gathering for Janet’s Celebration Of Life will be announced, for family, loved ones and friends.
