Janice M. Flegel

On March 5th, 2020 in Coxsackie, New York, Janice Lenore Maher Stafford Flegel, died peacefully at her home while in the loving care of her family, and listening to her favorite song, “Moon River”. Janice was born March 22nd in Catskill, NY to Mathilde (Bauerle) and James Maher, and big brother William. She was a compassionate person and became a Registered Nurse after graduating from Columbia Memorial School of Nursing in Hudson, New York. During her career, Janice worked in a variety of practice settings, but many may remember her as the school nurse at Coxsackie Elementary. Janice is warmly remembered for her generosity, spirituality, intelligence, tolerance and beautiful smile. She had many talents and interests; from being a wonderful artist, who won a national contest as a teen for dress design, to her love of music and dancing. She played the flute and piano and loved to paint, draw and decorate. The gifts she wrapped were works of art and an expression of her love for the recipient. Janice loved to spend time outdoors pursuing activities that gave her joy; kayaking, horseback riding, hiking, breathing in the fresh air and soaking in the sunshine. She loved the beach and especially the time spent with her grandchildren collecting shells and feeling the sand between her toes. “Living in the moment” was what she called her spontaneity and willingness to embark on an adventure at a moments’ notice. Her spirit of adventure and wanderlust often involved taking the road less traveled rather than highways, which sometimes drove her children nuts! “Enjoy the Journey” she would say. Janice had an eclectic circle of friends who were an important part of her life. They have been a blessing and comfort to her family. Janice cherished time spent with her family and friends above all else. Janice’s love will forever be remembered by her children, Bill Stafford and Debbie, Susan Stafford Wu, Jennifer Flegel Rausch and Ron, and her cherished grandchildren Megan and Connor Wu, and Ainsley and Ronin Rausch. As well as her husband, Ted Flegel, many close cousins and dear friends. Please share your memories of Janice and tales of your adventures (or misadventures). A celebration of her life will take place at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, date and time to be announced.
