Joseph L. Persichilli

Joseph Louis Persichilli, age 87, and a longtime area resident of Athens, NY passed peacefully on December 21, 2023 after a long illness. He joins his beloved wife Barbara who passed away in May 2022, they had been married for 58 years. He is survived by his children Karen (Michael), Kristina, Joseph and Anthony (Dawn) as well as his beloved grandchildren Jessica, Joseph, Max and Natalie, who lovingly called him Poppy. He was also predeceased by his brother Louis and brothers-in-law John Misak and Joseph Marino. He leaves behind his adoring sisters Mary Marino and Margaret Tiso, brother-in-law Joseph Tiso and sisters-in-law Carolyn Misak and Georgianne Persichilli as well as many cousins, nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. Joe was born in Richmond Hills, Queens to Anthony and Florence (LaRocca). He was raised in Jamaica, Queens where he met the love of his life, Barbara (Misak). Joe graduated from John Adams High School and attended classes at John Jay College. He was a proud member of the NYPD Badge #24701 for twenty years where he served honorably until he retired in 1984. Joseph served his country in The United States Army, receiving a Medal of Good Conduct. Joe and Barbara raised their family in Baldwin, New York and were very involved at St. Christopher’s Church where Joe served as an usher and headed up security for the parish feast for many years. He was a devoted father in immeasurable ways including changing his work schedule to steady midnights so he could be home in the afternoon for his kids including coaching Little League. He was always present for his family, never missed a game, event, concert or gathering his children were involved in. Being a grandfather was his calling, and he nurtured a special relationship with each of his grandchildren doting on them with their favorite snacks and interests during visits and trips. After Joe retired, he and Barbara relocated to Stamford, New York and later to Athens. Wherever Joe put down roots, he developed great friendships and found ways to be involved in the local community. Giving back and helping others was a value he instilled in his children and grandchildren. He would give anyone the shirt off his back and his patience was something to be admired. Joe was gregarious and positive, had an infectious smile and everyone he met felt instantly comfortable and important; it was one of his many super powers. He was an avid Mets fan who loved sports, playing golf, corny jokes, puzzles and word games (the newspaper jumble!), trivia, and the weather. His family would like to thank the amazing nurses, aides and staff at Ten Broeck Nursing Home in Lake Katrine, NY and the community of friends he met there over the last months of his life. Family and friends are invited to visit on Thursday, December 28, 2023 from 10:00 A.M. – 12:00 Noon at The St. Mary’s R.C. Church, 80 Mansion Street, Coxsackie, NY, 12051. Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated the same day at the church at 12:00 Noon. Arrangements are under the direction of The W.C. Brady’s Sons, Inc.
