Leonard "Arky" Warren

Leonard Arkell Warren “Arky” passed away suddenly on May 8, 2017. Arky was born April 27, 1946 in Albany, New York and lived in Coxsackie almost all of his life. He graduated from Hoosac School in Hoosick, NY in 1965 and attended Yampa Valley College in Steamboat Springs, CO. He started working at the family business, State Telephone Company, when he was 16 years old and retired in June 2012. Arky had many passions, he loved spending time with his wife, daughters and 12 grandchildren. One of the things his grandchildren loved the most about him was that he made time to attend every sporting event, concert and activity that they had. He loved his garden! He spent countless hours creating a huge garden from seedlings every year that could feed the entire neighborhood. Arky learned to ski at a very young age, and was considered to be an expert skier with elegant style. He looked forward to winter, when he would spend his days on the slopes at Hunter Mountain, and enjoy his annual trip to Europe. Arky could also be found listening to Neil Diamond while shooting off fireworks from his house in the village every Fourth of July, much to the chagrin of the local police. He was passionate about sailing and boating on the Hudson River and the rainbow colored sail of his Hobie Cat was often seen from the shore. His village of Coxsackie was very important to him. He loved the sense of community, the people, the history and his home displays much of his collection of local memorabilia. He passed on his love of the community to his children and grandchildren. He was a huge fan of the NY Yankees and Giants and could often be heard cheering with gusto at his TV during the games. He played many sports, including softball and soccer in his younger years, and later, golf. Arky could light up a room with his infectious smile, hearty laugh, and charm. He loved people and socializing. Any stranger who met him quickly became a friend. He will be remembered and truly missed by all who knew him. His wife, daughters, sons-in-law, and grandchildren are heartbroken. He is survived by his devoted wife, Wendy and his four daughters, Jennifer (John) Benchimol, of Clinton, CT, Jessica (Alex) Betke of Coxsackie, Allison (Tyrone) Coleman of Coxsackie, and India Fitzgerald of Coxsackie. He is also survived by his twelve grandchildren, Kara (Frank) O’Rourke, KC Benchimol, Kieran Coleman, Abby Benchimol, Alex Betke, Bridgett Coleman, Julian Benchimol, Kylie Fitzgerald, Brenna Coleman, Megan Betke, Jillian Fitzgerald, Brooke Betke and his adopted grandson Javier Sierra of Spain. He was anxiously awaiting the arrival of his first great-grandchild in August. He is also survived by his siblings, Susan (Lawrence) Slattery, James (Christine) Warren, Margaret (Jeff) Jones, Chester (Jennifer) Warren, Wynne Warren, Barton Warren, Joseph Warren, Claudia Warren and Lenore Warren, as well as his very large extended family. He is pre-deceased by his mothers, Elizabeth Whitbeck Warren and Florence Woodward Warren, and his father, Leonard Hall Warren. Visiting hours will be held at the W. C. Brady’s Sons, Inc. Funeral Home, 97 Mansion Street, Coxsackie, N.Y. from 2:00 - 4:00 P.M. and 6:00 - 8:00 P.M. on Thursday, May 11, 2017. Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Mary’s R.C. Church in Coxsackie in his honor on Friday May 12, 2017, at 11:00 A.M. Interment will follow in the family plot of The Riverside Cemetery, Coxsackie, N.Y. In lieu of flowers, the family requests a donation be made to local organizations, such as the Heermance Memorial Library, The Greene County Historical Society, The Coxsackie Senior Center, or to The Coxsackie Food Pantry.
