Mr. Robert L. Smith Sr.

Robert Louis Smith, Sr. went to be with the Lord August 7, 2017. Bob is a long time resident of Greene county since 1971, raising his three children with his wife Diane in Coxsackie. Bob was born and raised in Somerset, OH number 10 of fifteen children. He was an avid tinkerer and tireless worker to support his family. Bob had a deep devotion to the life of Jesus as he meditated on the mysteries of the Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary daily. May his acceptance of Jesus Christ and His redemptive death on the Cross, through devotion to the first fruit of Christ’s salvation, His Virgin Mother Mary, afford Bob an inheritance in Our Lord’s eternal kingdom and a realization of Jesus’ Divine Mercy. Bob is survived by his wife Diane Smith (Capasso) of 55 years of Earlton, daughter Judith M. McGuire of Earlton, Robert Louis Smith, Jr. of Earlton, and Christopher Albert Smith and daughter in law Kathleen Marie Smith of West Palm Beach, FL. Bob has eight beautiful grandchildren Sarah Sroka of Leeds, Julianna Sroka and Rachel McGuire of Earlton, Grace, Glorianna, Joshua, Jesse and Joseph Smith of Florida. Robert’s simple faith and commitment to his family was a model of St. John of the Cross’ understanding of the spiritual marriage, or union with God. In the words of Curtis Martin, “while the foundation of the spiritual marriage was established on the Cross, it unfolds in our personalities over a lifetime after a long journey. In one sense, the marriage is effected all at once on the Cross and is communicated to us in Baptism; in another sense it unfolds only gradually, little by little, at the pace the wounded soul can endure.” Much like Mother Teresa of Calcutta, “God does not call us to be successful, He calls us to be faithful.” It is remarkably fitting that Robert, who spent a brief stay in a monastery, should go to his reward on the feast of Carmelite priest Albert of Sicily. Albert was his father’s name and his mother in law was from Sicily. He who is forgiven much, loves much (Luke 7:47 Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend calling hours at The W. C. Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, August 12, 2017 at 10:00 A.M. at St. Mary’s R.C. Church, Coxsackie, N.Y., with Rev. Fr. Winston Bath, officiating. Interment will follow in the family plot of The St. Mary’s Parish Cemetery, Coxsackie, N.Y. Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. Smith, Sr.,age 80 years, of Coxsackie, N.Y., passed away on August 7, 2017, at his home. Robert was born on June 25, 1937. Robert served his country proudly in The U.S. Army from 1946-1948.
