Elaine Cherrington

Elaine Violet (Obach) Cherrington, passed away on May 27th, 2025 at the age of 79. She was born on November 9th, 1945 on Long Island, to George Robert and Violet H. Obach. Elaine is survived by her brother Richard (Hanni) Obach of Cairo, NY, daughters Maura (Joseph) Yousko of Punta Gorda, FL and Gayle (Cherrington) Ruvolo of Acra, NY, and her son Robert Christopher Cherrington of Round Top, NY. She is also lovingly remembered by her 12 grandchildren: Michael (Kim) Cona, Andrew Dreste, Kayleigh Dreste, Kenny Dreste, Philip Ruvolo, Brandi Ruvolo, John J. Ruvolo, Breanna Cherrington, Christopher Cherrington, Tyler Cherrington, Joseph (Destiny) Yousko, and Michelle Yousko. She also has 6 great grandchildren: Aubrie Cona, Xavier Cona, Aiden Dreste, Bentley Yousko, Skylar Yousko, and Catelinn Yousko. She was preceded in death by her husband Robert G. Cherrington (9/00), her eldest brother Robert Obach (1/25), daughter Dawn (Cherrington) Dreste (2/25), and her grandson Michael Yousko (3/00). Elaine had a big heart and was loved by many. Helping others was what she was all about. Serving others before herself. She had a way about her that made anyone feel welcome and part of the family. If she wasn’t going by Elaine it was either “mom” or “grandma.” And if you were coming over, you better expect to be fed! Growing up she worked at her grandmother’s resort, “Eva’s Farm” in Purling, NY. She was known as “Gopher” because she would have to “go for this” or “go for that” if they ran out of something. She worked in the kitchen and as a waitress with her family. She also waitressed at Wolfe’s Maple Breeze in Catskill, NY. For fun she liked swimming at Shinglekill Falls, stream walking and roller skating at the Purling roller rink. Her later years she enjoyed Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy. She’d be the first to let you know it was “7 o’clock!” She never missed an episode. She loved to read as well, especially a good mystery; and if she was going out, you better believe she’ll be on that dancefloor encouraging others to have as good a time as she. Elaine was known to her grandchildren as cha cha grandma (aka Dancing Grandma) loved to sing as well and when her brother Richard would go fishing in the Catskill streams, she’d wait eagerly for her share of his smoked trout or eel. Elaine worked for 23 years as a cook at the Greene County Dept of Aging- Acra Nutrition site. She enjoyed her work, and all the seniors and friends she made everyday. She was also very involved in her Church, Sacred Heart of Cairo, NY. She would read passages from the scripture for mass. She and her granddaughter Breanna would also volunteer at the local food pantry in Cairo, giving back to those in need. Mass will be at Sacred Heart Church in Cairo, NY on September 27, 2025, at 11:00 am, Eulogies will start at 10:30. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Leukemia Foundation. She really was a hoot and a holler. A friend to everyone. She will surely be missed. To leave condolences for the family please visit the tribute wall above.
