Leona Palmateer

It is with great sadness we announce that our Mother, Leona Dolan Palmateer, passed away on December 29, 2023 at the age of 93 from a brief illness. Leona was born on August 14, 1930. She was the daughter of the late Philip and Gertrude Fitzgerald Dolan. “Onnie” as she was known to her family and friends grew up in Coxsackie with her 3 sisters; Gertrude Dolan Youmans, Agnes Dolan Roberts and Madeline Dolan. Onnie graduated from Coxsackie High School where she had been a cheerleader and prom queen. She went on to marry John S. Palmateer. She was happily married until his death in July 1997. Leona was later blessed with 5 children whom she loved dearly. Sadly she was predeceased by her son Philip Palmateer and Kathleen (Ronald) Daoust. She is survived by Joanne (Peter) Kraljevich of Coxsackie, John (Barbara) Palmateer and Michael (Dawn) Palmateer both of Athens. Onnie had 13 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren and 1 great, great grandchild; all were the joy of her life. Onnie was a stay at home mom and wife until her children were grown. She then went on to work at Catskill Hospital, where she eventually retired from. In addition, she belonged to many civic and community organizations. In her earlier years she enjoyed camping and bowling. Onnie had an unwavering faith in God. She attended church regularly at St. Patrick’s in Athens. She was an avid Mets fan and could be found watching the games whenever she could find them on. Onnie also liked to write poetry and enjoyed Friday afternoon get togethers with her friends. Onnie had a wonderful sense of humor and a warm smile. She had a mischievous nature at times. Although Onnie had never lived in Ireland, she was known to break out in an Irish brogue from time to time. We will forever keep her memories in our hearts and she will be truly missed. Relatives and friends are invited to visit the family on Thursday January 4, 2024 from 3-5 pm at the Richards Funeral Home, 28 North Vernon St. Athens. Funeral Services for Onnie will take place on Friday January 5 at 11:00 am at St. Patrick’s Church, 24 North Washington St. Athens. Burial will take place in Athens Rural Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to the Greene County Woman’s League, Cancer Patient Aid, P.P. Box 341, Round Top, NY 12473 Arrangements have been entrusted to the Richards Funeral Home, Athens, New York
