Bettyjean Poole Obituary - Visitation & Funeral Information

Bettyjean Poole of Athens, NY went home to the loving arms of our Lord and Savior on July 27, 2022. She was born on March 8, 1932 in Catskill, NY to Dora and Percy Sterritt. She is survived by her devoted husband Alton, son Mitchell (Nancy Moretti), daughter Sheila and beloved grandson Andrew. She is also survived by her sister Jane Loveland of Arizona, brother Richard of Florida, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and cherished friends. Besides her parents, she is predeceased by her brothers Jerome and Chuck Sterritt, and niece Jennifer Sterritt Smith, as well as numerous members of the Poole family. Bettyjean was a talented and generous soul, baking special occasion cakes, sewing dance costumes and wedding gowns, crocheting, tatting, painting, drawing and practicing calligraphy. She also enjoyed singing in numerous churches and choirs. Her artistic talents knew no bounds. She was the Village of Athens historian for over 50 years, passing her love of history and knowledge of Athens to all who asked. Recognized by the American Red Cross for teaching tens of thousands children and adults how to swim, as well as certifying lifeguards for 40 years through Greene County. Throughout her 90 years, she also enjoyed teaching roller skating, leading her daughters Girl Scout and 4-H Clubs and being the team’s top fan and party hostess for her son’s sports groups. She is past member of the Athens Fire Depart. Auxiliary, Athens Street Festival and Bicentennial Committees. In later years she enjoyed attending classic car shows and cruise-in’s with her husband. Perhaps most of all she will be remembered for the 600 red candy apples that she made every Halloween and being “that Mom” who always had a spare hug to give to any child that needed one. Relatives and friends are invited to attend calling hours at The Athens Federated Church, 18 North Franklin Street, Athens, N.Y., 12015, on Tuesday, August 2, 2022, from 10:00 A.M. – 12:00 Noon, with funeral services at 12:00 Noon at the church. Interment will follow in the family plot of the New Athens Rural Cemetery, Athens, N.Y Donations may be made to The Community Hospice of Columbia and Greene Counties, 47 Liberty Street, Catskill, N.Y. 12414 or the Athens, NY charity/community fund of your choice.
