November 24, 1959 - March 17, 2022

Douglas Sanford Sr. of Athens N.Y. passed away on March 17, 2022, at home in the care of Community Hospice and family and friends. Born November 24 1959, he was the son of the late Charles Yakman and Helen Yakman. Douglas was a graduate of Mount Pleasant High School. He was previously married to Karol Guenter and had a son Douglas Sanford Jr., also caring for Karol's daughter Diana before divorcing later on. Douglas worked at Columbia Box Board, Camp Eagle Hill and F.H. Stickles and Sons. Douglas later remarried to Cindy and gained another son Brett Perez. Douglas was an active fireman with Athens Fire Company until his many illnesses restricted him from duty. He also served with Rotterdam District 2, Ghent Fire Company, and Stockport Fire Company. He continued to monitor his home scanner and listen to local emergencies. Douglas loved fishing, and couldn't wait for striper season to begin. He would spend evenings and weekends whenever possible down at the river with friends and family soaking up the sun and enjoying the great outdoors. He always enjoyed family cookouts and gatherings and holidays together. Douglas was predeceased by his loving wife Cindy Sanford and Brother Bruce Yakman and sister in-law Julene Sanford. He is survived by his sons Douglas Sanford Jr. and Brett Perez and daughter Diana Isherwood. Also survived by his brother Tony Sanford (Julene) his sisters Rhonda (Jack) and Helena (Dennis) and nieces and nephews Joe, Helen, Joanne and Brianna. He is also survived by his long time friend and companion Thomas Sheffer. Services are at W.C. Brady's Sons, Inc. Funeral Home, 97 Mansion Street, Coxsackie N.Y., 12051, on Saturday, March 26, 2022 from 12:00 Noon – 2:00 P.M.
