Guenther C. Ohm July 17, 1926-January 25, 2015 Born in Schwerte, Germany, Guenther and his parents, Federick and Louise Ohm immigrated to Brooklyn, in 1929. He attended public schools in Brooklyn and art classes at Pratt Institute. In 1940 the family moved upstate to Greene County to start a poultry and dairy farm. Upon graduation from Cairo High School in 1941, Guenther continued to help run the family farm and started work at The Catskill Foundry. A short while later, he started a trucking and excavating business that he operated for 53 years. In 1950 he married the love of his life, Agnes Ohm (ne Pohler). When Agnes decided to start a business, he helped her build and operate the Sleepy Dutchman Motel for 14 years. Later in life he served on the Durham town planning board and felt privileged to be a Greene County legislator for almost 21 years. Active well into his eighties, Guenther enjoyed spending time with his family and neighbors, as well as woodworking, reading, hunting and maintain his home and grounds in South Durham. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Agnes, two sons Guenther Jr., and Stephen and his wife Barbara, and four granddaughters, Rebecca, Rachel, Johanna, and Valerie. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 31, 2015 at Richards Funeral Home, 29 Bross St., Cairo, NY, at 2:30 PM, with Fr. John Bucki officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Resurrection Lutheran Church Food Pantry, Cairo, NY. A dinner/ reception will be held following the memorial service at The Blackthorne Resort, 348 Sunside Road, East Durham, New York, 12423.
