Mrs. Joyce Karen Oswald

April 26, 1934 - September 9, 2017

Joyce Karen Oswald, age 83 years, passed away on September 9, 2017, in New Hampshire. Joyce was born to Walter and Bertha Ackerman on April 26, 1934, in Hackensack, NJ and grew up in Midland Park, NJ. Joyce Karen moved to Cairo, NY, with her three children and started a 34-year career with the Cooperative Extension Services of Greene County in 1962. JK loved family, poetry, old buildings, and country music. After retirement, her hobbies were rebating, and antiquing, calling it “running the roads”, and knitting countless hats and gloves for needy school children. She and her husband would summer in the peninsula town of Port Clyde, Maine, at Turkey Pond, her favorite place. She loved spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, and they loved spending time with her. Mrs. Oswald was an avid patriot, being so proud to e a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She will be best remembered for her unselfish dedication to our nation’s service men and women. JK hand packaged hundreds of necessary products, as well as comforting treats, to troops all over the world. She wanted to make sure everyone received mail from home. For Christmas, she would wrap each item in its own festive wrapping paper. For her efforts, the DAR, various chapters of the VFW as well as the local Chamber of Commerce, acknowledged her with awards of gratitude. Joyce Karen was predeceased by her husband of 38 years. She is survived by her three children; Walter Stout, and his wife, Teri, Valerie Eriksen and Steven Stout, and his wife, Paula. Mrs. Oswald was known as “Grandma” to seven grandchildren; Amy, Britta, Laura, Tara, Cory, Rebecca, and Joanna as well as 8 great-grandchildren. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend calling hours at Richards Funeral Home, 29 Bross Street, Cairo, NY, on Friday, September 15, 2017, from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. and also on Saturday, September 16, 2017 from 9:00 A.M. to 11:00 A.M. Funeral services will take place on Saturday, at 11:00 A.M. at the funeral home with Pastor Rick Snowden of The Community Life Church in Catskill, N.Y. officiating. Interment will follow in the family plot of The Round Top Cemetery, Round Top N.Y. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Joyce Karen’s memory may be made to Friends of Hyder Family Hospice House, (FHFH), 285 Country Farm Road, Dover, N.H. 03820.
