Mrs. Ruth A. (Bigelow) Apa, 100, a resident of The Meadows at Gettysburg and formerly of Waynesboro, PA, died Friday, November 24, 2017, in the nursing home. Born November 9, 1917 in Burlington, VT, she was the daughter of the late Ralph and Eva (Maxfield) Bigelow. She and her husband, the late Charles A. “Chas” Apa, were married on June 3, 1939 in Athens, NY. They lived in Athens for 64 years, prior to moving to Waynesboro in May 1999. Mrs. Apa was last employed for the County of Greene, NY as a deputy elections commissioner. She retired in 1980. She is survived by one son, Charles A. and his wife, Catherine M. Apa of Waynesboro; four grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by one daughter, Catherine Ruth Apa on December 14, 1997; four sisters; and three brothers. Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Thursday, November 30, 2017 at Richards Funeral Home, 28 Vernon St. Athens, NY, with Pastor Rick Snowden officiating. Interment will follow in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Athens, NY. The family will receive friends from 6:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. Wednesday evening at Richards Funeral Home, 28 North Vernon Street, Athens, NY.
