Hannah Jane Spring

On August 10, 2026, beloved Mother and cherished friend Jane Spring was called home to her heavenly rest with God and those she loved who had gone before. Jane was one of the sweetest, kindest, most compassionate souls ever to walk this earth and was dearly loved by all who knew her. She was a friendly, sweet person with a beautiful smile she shared freely with anyone and everyone, and she made friends wherever she went. Jane was born Hannah Jane Carn, the only child of Catherine Freda Rogers and Millard Cortland Carn at Benedictine Hospital in Kingston, Ulster County New York on October 15, 1939. She grew up on Blue Mountain Road in Saugerties with the Catskill Mountains always in the background. She attended grade school at one of the last one-room school houses that existed on Route 32 in Saxton and graduated from Saugerties High School in 1957. Jane loved nature, animals, especially cats and birds, gardening, music, Native American history and culture, and baseball from an early age. She married Jesse Ransom who she lost to cancer after a short couple years of marriage after they moved to Greene County and Jesse, a carpenter, built her a home in Freehold. She met and married George Spring in 1970 and gave birth to a baby boy, Wylie Millard, in 1972, and a baby girl, Mary Jane, in 1975. After George died in 1981, Jane devoted her life to raising her two children with more unconditional love and kindness than any mother could. She was a strong, independent woman who despite the sad losses she had been through, was always a happy and optimistic person. Although she did not attend church, she had a rock-solid Faith in God and a cheerful spirit that knew we were all In His Care. A true believer in the teachings of Jesus, she believed we were put on this earth to care for one another and always give to the less fortunate. Jane loved nature, birds, and cats, and was an avid gardener her whole life. She created a loving peaceful home and raised her kids in nature and the garden and always had an abundance of vegetables to share, can, pickle, and freeze. If you visited her in the summer you were bound to leave with one of her mixed brown paper bags filled with tomatoes, green beans, cukes, zukes, beets, herbs, and flowers. Any time she would visit friends she’d always pick them a bouquet especially her favorite heirloom June roses. Jane was a great cook and made homemade bread and the best soup ever. If you came to visit, you’d have to have a cup of tea properly brewed in a ceramic tea pot because she was English, and some homemade oatmeal cookies. Music was so important to Jane and had a profound effect on her. John Denver was her all-time favorite artist but she also loved Luciano Pavarotti, Andrea Bocelli, Sarah Brightman, Sting, Herb Alpert, and the classical radio station that was always on in the background. When she was listening to her music and crying, you knew she was actually happy. Jane was a “dyed in the wool” baseball fan since she was a teenager listening to games on the radio in the 1950’s and a lifelong Yankees fan. She absolutely adored Derek Jeter and her all- time favorite player was Mariano Rivera. She relished the Golden Era of Yankees baseball when the “Core Four” were at the peak of their careers and winning World Series. She cried when Mo Rivera was taken off the mound for the last time by Derek and Andy Pettitte, and when Derek retired. Jane adored cats and had rescued many strays and dumped out kittens over her lifetime. She had countless beloved felines that we hope she has been re-united with in heaven. She was an advocate for wildlife and the preservation of nature and especially song bird habitat on her own property. To her, all Gods creatures deserved compassion and respect no matter how small. Her kind and gentle spirit was an inspiration and will be missed by those who knew her. Jane was an incredibly strong, tough woman with a tenacious will to live, who had survived so much medically over the past 5 years. Sadly her earthly body was tired and ready to go home to heaven where she is free once again to enjoy nature, gardening, and all of God’s creation. She has been reunited with her parents Catherine (Freda) and Millard, her husband George, her half- brother Ed Ashley (Uncle Frank), her dear niece Sandy Trombley, and her cherished best friend Judy Spring. She is survived by her beloved son Wylie of Berne NY and her devoted daughter Mary Jane of Freehold NY. Those who wish to honor Jane’s life can make a donation in her memory to either the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society, or the Columbia Greene Humane Society, or Animal Kind in Hudson. Graveside services will be celebrated on Tuesday August 25, 2026 at 11:00 am in the Freehold Cemetery. To leave condolences for the family please visit the tribute wall above.
