Mr. Lloyd R. Ryan

Lloyd R. Ryan, born May 3, 1927, passed away surrounded by the love of his family. He is survived by his beloved wife of 73 years, Emma M. Ryan, with whom he shared a lifetime of devotion, partnership, and cherished memories. Lloyd grew up in the small village of Athens, where he learned the value of hard work and community at a young age. As a boy, he held many jobs throughout the village, including working as a pin boy at the local bowling alley, delivering newspapers for the Athens Harold, and delivering milk for Vosburgh’s. Those early experiences helped shape the strong work ethic and dependable character that would define him throughout his life. As he grew into adulthood, Lloyd worked for the Greene County Highway Department while also building a prolific Christmas tree farm on the side. He was known for his love of the land and his willingness to work hard in every season. Over the years, he grew and sold tomatoes, picked apples, and cultivated many other crops and projects with pride and determination. Long before recycling became commonplace, Lloyd was a passionate recycler who believed strongly in making use of everything and wasting nothing — a reflection of both his practicality and deep respect for the world around him. Lloyd had what many would call “two green thumbs.” His gardens were legendary, producing enough food to feed not only his family, but many others as well. He found joy in growing things and sharing the fruits of his labor with those around him. Wild animals seemed to recognize his gentle nature just as much as people did — deer would eat directly from his hand, and skunks would patiently wait by the back door for leftovers from dinner. Animals and plants alike seemed drawn to Lloyd’s kind, generous spirit. In 1953, Lloyd met the love of his life, Emma. Their first date was on New Year’s Eve at a party in Catskill, the beginning of a love story that would last a lifetime. By July 3, 1954, they were married, beginning 73 beautiful years together filled with love, laughter, hard work, and unwavering devotion. In Emma’s words, Lloyd was “the most perfect husband, father, grandfather, and friend,” a man full of compassion who lived his life without hate for anything or anyone. His kindness, patience, and generosity touched everyone fortunate enough to know him. Lloyd was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend who treasured time spent with his family and loved ones. He is lovingly remembered by his children: Vicky and her husband Tony; David and his wife Saysha; Richard and his wife Kelly; Lori and her husband Steven; and Barbara and her husband Chris. He is also survived by his many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, whose lives were enriched by his love, guidance, and presence, as well as dear friends Marianne and Tommy Tompkins, and his sister Marjorie. He was predeceased by his parents, Archibald Ryan and Ethel-Mallory Ryan; his brothers Claude, Myron, and Herbert; and his sister Alberta. Lloyd will be remembered for the life he built with his family and the lasting impact he had on all who knew him. His enduring marriage to Emma stood as a testament to commitment, strength, and lasting love across generations.
